Hi ,

In my book Mission Possible, co-authored with Dr. Stephen Covey and Brian Tracy, Dr. Covey in Chapter Two says, When it comes to developing interpersonal trust between people, it is made up of many, many elements such as taking the time to listen to other people, to understand them, and to see what is important to them. What we think is important to another may only be important to us, not to another. It takes empathy. You have to make and keep promises to them. You have to treat them with kindness and courtesy. You have to be completely honest and open. You have to live up to your commitments. You can’t betray them behind their back. You can’t badmouth them behind their back and sweet-talk them to their face. That will send out the vibes of hypocrisy and it will be detected.

Covey goes on to talk about apologizing, “You have to learn to apologize when you make mistakes, to admit mistakes, and to also get feedback going in every direction as much as possible. It doesn’t necessarily require formal forums; it requires trust between people that will be open with each other and give each other feedback.”

One thing I would add to Dr. Covey’s thoughts is, to forgive yourself. Trust, and building empathy are created from an open mind which means a clear mind. So let go of anything and everything you have done in the past. It’s gone, it’s over and it’s time to move on. Forgive yourself, forgive others and have an amazing and productive life…you deserve it!

Action Steps to Develop Interpersonal Trust

  • Be trustworthy
  • Create an atmosphere of openness by being great
  • Let the human being (the higher self) come out
  • Walk the talk
  • Trust starts with you—you have to be trusting first and then others will trust you

Action Steps to Making an Apology:

  • You just have to do it
  • If you have made a mistake admit it as quickly as you can
  • Don’t take things personally
  • Don’t allow your ego to be in charge
  • Be the observer not the absorber
